Dr. Oommen completes a second specialty in Emergency Medicine and starts working full-time in the ER at St. Mary’s Hospital in Montreal. Over the next few years he extends his Emergency Medicine practice to the Montreal General Hospital, the Royal Victoria Hospital and the Ottawa General Hospital. However he feels that in spite of the great care that is delivered every day in emergency rooms around the country – there is a missing link. He sees one heart attack or stroke victim every shift and it becomes increasingly evident that these patients are sorely lacking in preventive care. He begins thinking that if only we could have optimized the 7 risk factors for heart attack and stroke (the #1 killers in our society) they wouldn’t even need to be in his ER. At this point Dr. O. begins his research into Lifestyle Medicine – the science and art of optimizing a patient’s health through state-of-the-art diagnostics combined with an in-depth science-based, biological and psychological therapeutic strategy.
